The village of Sakti, nestled at an altitude of nearly 4,000 meters, exemplifies the challenges faced by farmers in these areas. With extreme weather conditions and scarce rainfall, traditional farming methods are struggling to survive. Gelak Gutme, a seasoned farmer, describes the harsh reality: "Ladakh has a brutal, single-cultivation season. It is a desert with an extreme climate."

The disappearance of smaller, low-altitude glaciers due to global warming has exacerbated the water scarcity issue. These glaciers, once acting as natural water towers, are now gone, leaving farmers with limited resources. Gutme's personal struggle is evident: "Last year I lost everything - my entire field got dried due to the lack of water."

Recognizing the need for innovative solutions, some Ladakh villages embarked on a daring project in the early 2010s. They aimed to create their own ice reservoirs, known as ice stupas, by piping water from higher mountain regions during winter and freezing it in the air. While this system successfully provided meltwater in the spring, it came with its own set of challenges.

Murtaza Ali, an executive engineer, highlights the management nightmare: "The system was a nightmare to manage under harsh winter conditions."

The potential for cracked pipes due to rapid temperature drops below minus 20 degrees Celsius was a constant concern. To address this, farmers would brave freezing nights, camping high in the mountains to rush to any blockages with boiling water. This arduous task, however, may soon become a thing of the past.

The introduction of the Automated Ice Reservoir (AIR) system has revolutionized the process. Developed in partnership with the private company Acres of Ice, AIR precisely controls ice production. By piping water from higher altitudes and using a computer-controlled system, AIR shoots water out of a vertical nozzle like a massive fountain.

Dr. Suryanarayanan Balasubramanian, the founder of Acres of Ice, explains the technology: "The system waits precisely long enough for that layer of water droplets to freeze solid based on current wind and humidity, then fires the spray again."

AIR's efficiency is remarkable, converting almost all diverted water into ice. The system runs automatically, using a local wireless network to connect the control box and valves, with a manual override available if needed. The impact on village life has been positive, with groundwater recharging and spring sources revived.

In the winter of 2025, Acres of Ice and the local government implemented 10 AIR projects across Ladakh. The focus now is on scaling up the technology. Balasubramanian envisions a future where a single system can create a dozen ice reservoirs, marking a significant leap in water management.

Farmer Gutme, inspired by the success of the AIR system, expresses optimism: "I am a farmer, land is all that I have to survive on. I don't know the technology, all that I know today is that I have water to grow my crops."

The story of Ladakh's artificial ice pyramids is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of technology to address pressing environmental challenges. As these innovative solutions continue to evolve, they offer a glimmer of hope for the future of agriculture in regions vulnerable to the impacts of global warming.
